*** It became evident during the early Convict voyages that Convicts experienced extreme physical and emotional impact during the three to four months transportation.
Royal Naval Surgeon, John GIBSON was sent on the “ Minden “ voyage , in charge of the health of 301 Convicts, arriving off Fremantle on 14 October, 1851. His report to the British establishment indicated that conditions on the voyages were improving, and stated :-
Discipline was strict, but Convicts were ordered and arrived in good health, being granted immediate Tickets of Leave. Attempts were made to keep the men occupied during the voyage with menial, physical tasks. Schools were formed on board and many convicts learned to read and/or write
